KUBLAI KHAN: A Chinese Mongol emperor
of the YUAN DYNASTY and grandson of
GENGHIS KHAN, Kublai Khan (1216-1294)
consolidated Mongol control over CHINA.
Granted lands in CHINA in 1236, Kublai
Khan led military campaigns in southern
CHINA during the 1250s and succeeded his
brother as the head of the empire founded by
his grandfather, GENGHIS KHAN.
Abandoning the traditional Mongol capital of
Karakorum, he created a new capital at
Khanbalik (present-day Beijing). Many
foreigners sat at his court, including the
Venetian explorer, MARCO POLO, and
Mongol rule brought prosperity to CHINA.
The Chinese, however, were not favorable to
foreign rule, and unsuccessful attempts to
conquer JAPAN and parts of Southeast Asia
challenged Kublai Khan's rule later in his
life. (See also China article).
