  1. KUBLAI KHAN: A Chinese Mongol emperor 
  2. of the YUAN DYNASTY and grandson of 
  3. GENGHIS KHAN, Kublai Khan (1216-1294) 
  4. consolidated Mongol control over CHINA. 
  5. Granted lands in CHINA in 1236, Kublai 
  6. Khan led military campaigns in southern 
  7. CHINA during the 1250s and succeeded his 
  8. brother as the head of the empire founded by 
  9. his grandfather, GENGHIS KHAN. 
  10. Abandoning the traditional Mongol capital of 
  11. Karakorum, he created a new capital at 
  12. Khanbalik (present-day Beijing). Many 
  13. foreigners sat at his court, including the 
  14. Venetian explorer, MARCO POLO, and 
  15. Mongol rule brought prosperity to CHINA. 
  16. The Chinese, however, were not favorable to 
  17. foreign rule, and unsuccessful attempts to 
  18. conquer JAPAN and parts of Southeast Asia 
  19. challenged Kublai Khan's rule later in his 
  20. life. (See also China article).
